Something a little different
A new kind of party is coming to Winnipeg from Toronto for this year’s Pride, hosted by Toronto artist and DJ Lauren Hortie and Winnipeg’s own Hannah Godfrey. Godfrey recently launched her queer dance night “PegGay-Licious” as DJ MonkeySparrow with fellow artist DJ Stagpanther. This June, they’re inviting Hortie to bring her “Steers & Queers” party to our city.

As much as the dance, it’s the costumes that audiences remember after the curtain goes down at the ballet. The dancers enthrall us with their grace and athleticism. The costumes entrance us with their glamour and exoticism. But while we get to know the faces and names of the dancers, the costume designers remain hidden and anonymous behind the scenes. And that’s just fine with Paul Daigle, who created the fabulous costumes for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s recent production of Svengali.

Rae SpoonIn February, Winnipeg will welcome back singer-songwriter Rae Spoon, who will be promoting a sixth full-length release, entitled I Can’t Keep All Of Our secrets. Spoon, who has been performing for 14 years, started out singing country music in their (spoon uses the neutral pronoun they rather than he or she) home province of Alberta. “I was singing about regular country music stuff. Oil rigs, and you know. “Stuff like that,” they say with a laugh.
