the lighter side

Who's Hot, Who's Not

HOT

Munir Sheikh

Canada's chief statistician resigned rather than support the Conservative government's decision to screw over the census form. Detailed information would prove that we're still a socially progressive country; anathema to Conservative rule. Harper tried to kill it, Sheikh stood on principle, and now Iggy's got ammo. Shoot, Iggy! Shoot!

Queers Against Israeli Aparthied

An upstart group of kids into world affairs brought the issue of Palestinian oppression to the fore, became the face of anti-censorship, and challenged the pink washing of Pride celebrations by corporate interests. Fist pump, "whoo-hoo!" etc.

Nate Phelps

The estranged son of notorious pastor Fred Phelps has signed on as Executive Director of the Alberta branch of the Centre for Inquiry (CFI), Canada's Leading Atheist Organization. Nate is proof that sometimes the acorn falls far away from the tree and into the sunshine.

NOT

Tony Clement

Harper's good little general in the War of Facts misinformed the public by saying Statistics Canada agreed to overhaul the census forms. Then, Clement fed Canadians the line that privacy was at stake. Clement may have saved a woman from drowning, but he's drowning the rest of us in bullshit.

Queers Against Israeli Aparthied

Youth latch on to a boutique issue hatched in cloistered student centres and bring an irrelevant geopolitical issue to the party of the year. The irony: neither side in this complex, long-standing dispute are especially hospitable to the LGBT population.

Rev. Fred Phelps

The pastor of Westboro Baptist Church and his lovable misfits are famous for the catchy "God Hates Fags" slogan and nonsensical "protests." He may get props for singling out singing chipmunk Justin "I'm NOT a lesbian" Bieber for protest at the Kansas city Comic Con, but Phelps media whoring has become less incendiary and more of an annoyance.
