OutWords and its predecessor, Swerve, have been the voice of the GLBT community in Manitoba since 1994. OutWords provides news, analysis and entertainment, including features and personality profiles. Editor
Responsibilities: Reporting to the publisher, the editor is responsible for determining the overall content of the magazine. The editor manages a team of freelance writers and photographers and recruits new talent as needed. The editor assigns stories, co-ordinates supporting photos and illustrations and develops annual magazine content plans. The editor works closely with other editors, the creative team and the sales team to ensure the magazine is produced on time and maintains high-quality content and a professional look. The editor also writes the monthly editorial.
Requirements: You will have a degree or diploma in journalism plus a minimum of five years experience as a magazine, newspaper or broadcast journalist. You have excellent communication and writing skills combined with a strong interest in news, social trends and entertainment. You are a self-starter able to build and foster a creative team. You are proficient with Mac computers and have a basic understanding of desktop publishing software by Adobe and Microsoft. You will have deep roots in the GLBT community.
Compensation: This is a volunteer part-time position requiring 40-50 hours a month. You will be paid an honorarium.
Assistant Editor
Responsibilities: Reporting to the editor, the assistant editor assists in creating the overall content of the magazine. The assistant editor edits copy from writers and prepares copy and art for the OutWords website and new media.
Requirements: You will have a degree or diploma in journalism, or be a student registered in a journalism program or have experience writing or editing for a print or online publication. You have excellent communication and writing skills combined with a strong interest in news, social trends and entertainment. You are a self-starter comfortable working unsupervised and as part of a team. You are proficient with Mac computers and have a basic understanding of desktop publishing software from Adobe and Microsoft. You will have a strong relationship with the GLBT community.
Compensation: This is a volunteer part-time position requiring 20-30 hours a month. You will be paid an honorarium and have the opportunity to learn new skills through mentorship by the senior editor.
New Media Editor
Responsibilities: Reporting to the editor, the new media editor manages the magazine's social media presence on Twitter and Facebook.
Requirements: You will have a degree or diploma in journalism, or be a student registered in a journalism program. You will have excellent communication and writing skills combined with a strong interest in news, social trends and entertainment. You are a self-starter comfortable working unsupervised and as part of a team. You are proficient with social media and Mac computers and have a basic understanding of desktop publishing software from Adobe and Microsoft. You will have a strong relationship with the GLBT community.
Compensation: This is a volunteer part-time position, requiring 20-30 hours a month. You will be paid an honorarium.
Advertising Salespeople
Responsibilities: Reporting to the publisher, advertising salespeople build and maintain strong client relationships with a diverse advertising base, including small, medium and large businesses, the entertainment industry, non-profit community organizations and government offices. You are able to communicate the value of advertising in OutWords to clients to grow and sustain our revenue base. You will engage our clients in arranging short- and long-term advertising contracts.
Requirements: You will be a self-starter able to work unsupervised and as part of a team. You are someone who enjoys making new friends and acquaintances. You will excellent communication skills and a strong customer-service orientation. You enjoy a challenge and are not intimidated when success requires repeat effort. You will have a post-secondary education or equivalent combined education, sales and business experience. Preference will be given to a candidate with experience in sales or a related field. You will have a strong relationship with the GLBT community.
Compensation: This is a part-time position, requiring 20-30 hours a month. Salary can be commission, flat rate or a combination and will be determined by mutual consent at time of hiring.
